ART on THE MART Artist Brendan Fernandes at Susan Inglett Gallery

Brendan Fernandes, ART on THE MART's fall 2024 headline artist, blends dance and visual arts with his works addressing issues of race, queer culture, migration, protest and other forms of collective movement. Fernandes' work is on view at Susan Inglett Gallery from November 30, 2023, until January 27, 2024, in his exhibition titled Within Reach, with a special performance by the artist on January 20, 2024, at 2:30 pm ET.

For the performance, contemporary dancers activate a series of sculptures that are inspired by West African headrests. The headrests are designed to preserve intricate hairstyles during sleep and also carry cultural and spiritual significance as they were believed to invoke vivid dreams and protect against nightmares. The dancers' movements aim to portray the connection to the spiritual and ethereal, striking a series of angular poses with bodies lie horizontal across the sculpture while arms extend vertically towards the sky.
