About the Work

Building on last year's successful collaboration, ART on THE MART's 2024 winter season showcases emerging talent from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), a renowned Chicago institution internationally recognized as one of the leading art and design schools in the world. 'Wavelength' is a new commission created by graduate and senior undergraduate students from SAIC, who have paired up to produce 11 unique works. Centered around the theme of 'Wavelength', the students were invited to explore the site-specific nature of THE MART and how visual and audio media are rooted in the same physical principles. Each participating pair of students—one focusing on the visual projection and the other on the audio segment—brings a unique approach and expertise in materials, tools, and collaborative processes to the project.

'Wavelength' was developed under the guidance of Jan Tichy, an ART on THE MART alumnus who debuted his commission 'Artes in Horto – Seven Gardens for Chicago' during the platform’s inaugural year in 2018, and Austen Brown, a Chicago-based sound artist and educator. Both Tichy and Brown are faculty members in SAIC's Department of Art & Technology/Sound Practices.
